Volunteer Day at Doko Farm!

Saturday, February 3, 2024, 1 - 4 PM

Update: This event is currently full. Thank you to all our volunteers who have registered. To learn about future workshops and volunteer work days, please join our email list and be sure to select "invites to farm events and tours."

What to Expect:

Volunteers will learn how to inoculate shiitake mushroom logs using sawdust spawn, and gain hands-on experience. Please note that we will be using power tools and hot melted wax during this process.

We will be focusing on inoculating the next generation of shiitake mushroom logs for Doko Farm's Edible Forest Garden Project, using both warm and wide range strains of sawdust spawn.

We will also demonstrate how to inoculate logs using plug spawn, for our first experimental run of lion's mane mushroom logs.

Volunteers will be able to take home a shiitake mushroom log that they inoculated, to fruit in their own back yard. We will also go over instructions for care of your logs.

What to Bring:

We have a limited amount of tools to get the job done. Volunteers are encouraged to bring the following:

***If anyone has a palm or thumb inoculation tool for sawdust spawn and are willing to bring it, we would be very grateful. This will be our limiting factor as we only have one of this specialized tool.

We will have some tools and PPE to share, but more tools will help us reach our goal.

This is an outdoor event so please dress accordingly. Closed toed shoes are required. In case of rain we will move work into the garage.

Volunteer Crew Leader:

Amanda is the CEIEIO of Doko Farm. (She is not certain what the extra letters stand for, but chances are she does those jobs too.)

An enthusiastic grower and forager of edible mushrooms, in 2014 Amanda earned one of the first 25 South Carolina Wild Mushroom Expert Identification and Resale Permits.

She started her first mushroom logs in 2020, and they have been fruiting for the last 3 years. She is excited to start the next generation of mushroom logs for Doko Farm's Edible Forest Garden Project and pass on what she has learned.
